Okonkwo Meets His End In the story Things Fall Apart the author, Chinua Achebe, uses the character Okonkwo to show that a man’s hubris can one day lead to a terrible fate. Achebe does this by having the main character Okonkwo struggle with keeping his life together. As Victor Uchendu talks about life in The Igbo World â€Å"is an equilibrium that is constantly threatened, and sometimes actually disturbed by natural and social calamities†(Uchendu 227). In the beginning of the story Okonkwo starts off as the strongest character when he defeats â€Å"Amalinize the Cat† (Achebe 3). This shows the reader that Okonkwo is the strongest and is determined to stay the strongest. Achebe uses certain events later in the story to foreshadow that Okonkwo will soon meet a terrible fate by having him kill Ikemefuna, by having him get kicked out of his village, by having the British change his son, and by displaying his rage and despair at the end of the story. Throughout the st ory Okonkwo refuses to show weakness to others. Okonkwo is greatly affected by this because â€Å"The Igbo people emphasized personal achievement†(Ohadike 240). This makes him very vulnerable when it comes to showing his strength to his village. So, when the elders of the village decide that his adopted son Ikemefuna must be killed, Okonkwo goes along with them to show that he is not weak. Comparing the Setting of Barn Burning to that of A Rose for Emily William Faulkner has written some of the most unique novels and short stories of any author, and, to this day, his stories continue to be enjoyed by many. Both â€Å"Barn Burning† and â€Å"A Rose for Emily† tell about the life of southern people and their struggles with society, but Faulkner used the dramatic settings of these two stories to create a mood unlike any other and make the audience feel like they too were a part of these southern towns. These two stories have many similarities in there setting, but they also have many differences to that make them unique and interesting. The Crucible, takes place in the Puritan Society where people are condemned of witchery, guilty or innocent were taken upon very harshly. The Crucible has many different themes, as mentioned before. One of the themes is narrow-mindedness. This is a theme for The Crucible in numerous ways. In the Puritan Society, the sins and crimes of a human being were taking upon in public concern. In the Puritan society there is no private life, all religions and feelings either go to God himself or the Devil himself. For example, in The Crucible, Judge Danforth claims that if you arent with us, you are against us and believe with the devil himself. Another prime example is the hangings of people in the Puritan Society, for even the innocent people were hung for the thought of witchery and the belief of devil worship. Another example, a great example, is at the end of the book where Proctor agrees to sign the paper. Judge Danforth says that he is going to place the paper on the church door, and suddenly Proctor takes the paper back and rips it. Proctor does this because everything has been taking away, but he does not want his name to be tarnished, the soul he can give, but the name he will not. The Crucible is a very strong and powerful play, which can be taken upon in many different ways in society as mentioned earlier. The themes in this book, help the character understand the true Puritan Society and way of life, and that if you didnt believe in the Puritan Society or Protestantism, than you were with the devil himself and would be cried upon witchery.
